GC Troubleshooting in 20 Pictures - Part I

Monday 26th October 2015,
8:00am PDT / 11:00am EDT / 16:00 BST / 17:00 CEST

A picture paints a thousand words…

The art of GC troubleshooting often lies in being able to recognize a problem from the evidence presented in the chromatogram or baseline appearance.

In this short series of two webcasts, we present 20 real life GC chromatograms and show you how to recognize the issues, deal with the causes and preventing them from happening again!

Presented by Tony Taylor (Technical Director, Crawford Scientific).

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize key GC issues from the appearance of the chromatogram or baseline
  • Appreciate the requirements for high quality gas supplies and understand how to achieve the optimum in gas cleanliness
  • Understand the optimal way to configure a split / splitless injection system and the routine maintenance and checks to keep it working properly
  • Understanding column loading and designing appropriate analyses to avoid column overload
  • Understand the principles of column installation and conditioning
  • Investigating issues with column and analyte chemistry
  • Recognize issues with settings or gas supply for common GC Detectors

Who Should Attend:

  • Anyone using GC
  • Anyone wishing to improve their GC troubleshooting skills

GC Troubleshooting in Pictures - Tutorial

They say a picture paints a thousand words…
The ability to recognise problems and identify their causes from the everyday pictures we see of baselines and separations, is a fundamental skill that every chromatographer should learn.

From real life examples or reconstructions, we teach the fundamentals of GC troubleshooting in 20 simple pictures over a short series of 2 webcasts (October and December 2015).

All of the common issues are highlighted alongside some of the more obscure problems, ensuring that the next time you look with horror upon the picture being painted by your data system, you can identify the problem, correct it and take preventative measures to make sure it doesn't happen again.
In this first session we cover many issues including;

Each of these problems is discussed in the webcast [accessible from the Webcast tab on top of this page] and alongside typical corrective actions and, importantly, preventative actions which can prevent these issues from occurring in future work.

Practical GC Troubleshooting Video   Interactive GC Troubleshooter - try it out for free »

This is a digital version of the laboratory troubleshooting wall poster with a new twist!  You can combine up to 5 symptoms simultaneously and the troubleshooting algorithm, based on hundreds of years of expert chromatography experience, will suggest a list of probable causes in priority order.  Each potential cause is accompanied by a quick fix guide and further reading from a host of sources including LCGC magazine and instrument vendors.

Practical GC Troubleshooting Video   Practical GC Troubleshooting Video - Peak Splitting »

In this video, we solve a problem with one split peak, in the middle of a GC chromatogram submitted to our Ask the Expert service by a CHROMacademy member. This video shows Tony Taylor (Technical Director, Crawford Scientific) explaining how to identify peak shape problems which occur in the middle of the elution range - often the most difficult problems to solve. He then discusses several potential causes, how to logically identify the source of the problem and what to do to avoid these issues happening again! Tune in to see what eventually fixed the problem!

Practical GC Troubleshooting Video   Practical GC Troubleshooting Video - Peak tailing »

In this video, we solve a GC peak tailing problem submitted to our Ask the Expert service by a CHROMacademy member.  This video shows Tony Taylor (Technical Director, Crawford Scientific) explaining how to use the interactive GC Troubleshooter to identify potential causes for the problem.  He then discusses each of the potential causes, how they might affect our chromatography and what to do to avoid them happening again.

A properly installed GC column is the most important beginning for your work. This 5 minute Quick Guide video demonstrates how to properly install a GC column, giving you great chromatography, analysis after analysis.

Fast HPLC GC Setup Checklist »

Whether your GC instrument has only been shut down for a couple of days or has been gathering dust in a corner for a year, follow our quick checklist to increase performance and reliability.

There are a host of troubleshooting resources and information within CHROMacademy.
We have a whole section on various aspects of GC troubleshooting accompanied by webcasts and great tutorial materials.  These webcasts act as a 'front to back' guide to GC troubleshooting and maintenance and, critically, include a host of useful practical preventative measures.

GC-Troubleshooting-Gas-Supply GC Troubleshooting - Gas Supply and Inlet Issues »

This session considers good practice for gas supply and delivery, electronic pressure control issues and gas quality management. We also investigate common problems and mistakes in choosing sample solvents and issues with autosamplers and syringes. We consider the most common instrument problems and mistakes associated with split / splitless inlets and examine essential maintenance to help avoid the pitfalls.

Fast HPLC GC Troubleshooting - Column & Detector Issues »

The Essential Guide from LCGC's CHROMacademy presents the second in our series of webcasts on Practical GC Troubleshooting. In this session, Dr. John Hinshaw (Senior Scientist , BPL Global Ltd) and Tony Taylor (Technical Director, Crawford Scientific), present practical troubleshooting and maintenance information associated with capillary GC columns and common detectors.

Fast HPLC GC Troubleshooting - Retention Time Efficiency and Peak Shape Issues »

This essential guide examines the common causes of retention time drift, loss of efficiency and peak shape issues (such as splitting, fronting, tailing and shouldering) in modern capillary gas chromatography. The guide provides useful practical information on identifying problems when they occur and how to best address them as well as giving general maintenance tips.

Fast HPLC GC Troubleshooting - Selectivity, Resolution and Baseline Issues »

Practical troubleshooting tips for GC separations, with special emphasis on selectivity changes, loss of resolution and baseline problems. The session includes a wealth of practical information on GC separation issues and all our real world problems are related to both separation chemistry and hardware issues. We consider the common problems and highlight causes and remedial actions in a very practically relevant way. A must see for everyone working with GC instruments.
