Band broadening is a phenomenon that reduces the efficiency of the separation being carried out; leading to poor resolution and chromatographic performance. This is problematic in terms of both the quality of the separation obtained and the accuracy with which sample components can be quantified.

There are several factors which contribute to band broadening all of which should be understood to minimize their effects. The first of these factors is eddy diffusion; this short video will demonstrate what eddy is, how it impacts chromatography, and how its contribution can be minimized.
