This module describes aqueous normal phase (ANP) chromatography, a unique high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) retention mechanism. Every chromatographer is familiar with reversed phase (RP), organic normal phase (ONP), hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC), and ion exchange modes of HPLC. However, use and understanding of ANP is less common. Therefore, we will discuss how ANP is beneficial in separation science and describe its applications.

Topics include:

  • What is ANP?
  • Buffer concentration in ANP mode
  • Why would an analytical chemist use ANP in the laboratory?
  • Examples of selected chromatograms obtained using the ANP technique
  • Method development strategies in ANP mode of chromatography
  • Troubleshooting ANP
