Making the Right Choice: Fully vs. Superficially Porous Columns in Practice

For more than 50 years, fully porous particles (FPP) have been the foundation of liquid chromatography, delivering reliable performance across a wide range of applications, separation modes, and column formats. More recently, advances in ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) using sub-2 µm fully porous particles have enabled exceptional separation efficiency, speed, and sensitivity. Since their commercial introduction in 2006, superficially porous particles (SPP), also known as core-shell particles, have emerged as a compelling alternative, offering high efficiency with lower operating pressures. But which particle technology is best suited to your application?

In this webcast, we compare fully porous and superficially porous particle technologies, examining the strengths and limitations of each and their role in modern liquid chromatography. Through theory and practical application examples, you'll gain the knowledge needed to select the most appropriate column technology for your analytical challenges.

Topics include:

  • Understanding the principles of fully porous and superficially porous particle technologies
  • Comparing the chromatographic performance of FPP and SPP columns across a range of applications
  • Recognizing when to select fully porous or superficially porous particles for optimum performance
  • Leveraging the analytical throughput, separation efficiency, and ease of operation offered by sub-2 µm FPP and SPP technologies

Dr Dawn Watson (CHROMacademy and Training Manager, Crawford Scientific)

Dawn completed her PhD in synthetic inorganic chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, followed by postdoctoral research on small molecule reaction kinetics at Princeton University. Following several years working as a field-based sales representative for a major instrument and pipette manufacturer, she became a technical expert for CHROMacademy in 2013. Her role with CHROMacademy has allowed her to produce training content over a wide range of analytical techniques, develop skills in helping companies to implement and make training successful, and to always be learning something new about analytical science!
