SPME in Practice: Techniques, Tips, and Troubleshooting

Thursday, August 20, 2026
8am PDT | 11am EDT | 4pm BST | 5pm CEST

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) is a powerful, cost-effective sample preparation technique that can significantly improve sensitivity while simplifying sample cleanup for GC and GC-MS analysis. By combining extraction, concentration, and sample introduction into a single, solvent-free step, SPME helps laboratories improve efficiency, reproducibility, and analytical performance.

Join this practical webcast, SPME in Practice: Techniques, Tips and Troubleshooting, for a comprehensive introduction to the technique. We'll explore how SPME works, when it should be used, how to select the right fiber for your application, and the key considerations for method development and optimization. We'll also share practical troubleshooting advice to help you overcome common challenges and achieve reliable results.

Topics include:

  • SPME fundamentals and extraction principles
  • Benefits of SPME for GC and GC-MS workflows
  • Fiber selection and coating types
  • Method development and optimization
  • Improving sensitivity and reproducibility
  • Best practices for routine analysis

Whether you're new to SPME or looking to refine existing methods, this webcast will provide practical guidance to help you get the most from your GC and GC-MS analyses.

Colin Towers (Senior Technical Support Chemist, Crawford Scientific)

After completing a degree in pharmacy, Colin Towers pursued a career in analytical chemistry. Following three years performing routine testing and three years performing instrument maintenance and calibration, he moved into a role as a method development and validation specialist in contract research. He gained 11 years of experience in developing methods for HPLC, LC-MS, GC, GC-MS, and SPE in a high-throughput commercial environment, which was supplemented by three years of lecturing in forensic analytical toxicology and a further three years working as a community pharmacist. Towers has been with Crawford Scientific since 2011 as a technical specialist, consultant, and trainer.
